The Mérieux Foundation is a foundation promoting the public interest, one of its missions being helping the development of health centers in developing countries. In Cambodia, the foundation actively contributed to the rebuilding of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Phnom Penh, and still brings it support. A crucial factor in 1001fontaines projects is controlling the quality of water produced by villages, key component for public safety, but it is a field where traditional quality-control processes are ill fitted, either because of the equipment usually needed, the cost for these controls or the physical distance with authorized laboratories.
A research project was launched in April 2008, to design and put in place measures to ensure and control the drinking water produced by the villages. The Mérieux Foundation continues to support 1001fontaines in its projects linked to water quality.
